microsoft is undertaking a large-scale structural overhaul of its first-party xbox studio network. according to multiple sources, ninja theory, the developer behind “hellblade,” has officially been shut down, with employees informed of this decision via an internal conference call on monday. although the studio has not yet been fully dissolved, microsoft is actively seeking potential acquirers—and just on june 8, ninja theory had announced its new title, “senua.”
meanwhile, several well-known development teams are facing shifts in their corporate affiliations: compulsion games, the studio behind “we happy few”; arkane studios, famed for “dishonored,” “prey,” and “deathloop”; and double fine, creators of the “psychonauts” series, are all at critical stages of being spun off or negotiating independence. bloomberg reports that these studios are currently in active discussions with external buyers, aiming to break free from the xbox game studios umbrella.
this round of restructuring follows last week’s strategic “reset” announcement by xbox ceo sarah bond and chief content officer matt booty. the duo explicitly stated that overexpansion of the studio portfolio in recent years has led to resource fragmentation, while ongoing pressure on the console hardware business has driven up overall operating costs—making this adjustment a direct response to those systemic challenges.
