meyer werft, a german shipyard, has unveiled the conceptual design for its first large, fully electric cruise ship. according to the designers, this visionary project aims to transform the way we travel by sea while reducing carbon emissions to near zero.
the 275-meter-long mega-cruise ship will be able to accommodate 1,856 passengers. corvus energy will provide the vessel’s power supply. the ship will be charged at ports equipped with comprehensive onshore infrastructure; by 2030, approximately 100 ports across europe are expected to have such facilities in place.
the project also includes a hybrid-electric variant, fitted with a small generator, for long-haul routes, including transatlantic crossings. however, the specific battery specifications and range for this type of vessel have not yet been disclosed.
if orders are placed this year, the first vessel could be launched as early as 2031. meyer werft believes that electric cruise ships will help the industry reduce emissions and accelerate overall development.
