according to code discovered by macrumors in the google maps app, the carplay version of google maps may soon support gemini ai. this integration will allow carplay users to obtain detailed navigation routes and information through gemini.
the code strings within the app indicate that after agreeing to new terms of service on the iphone version of google maps, users can instruct gemini to navigate to a specific location. currently, google maps already supports gemini on the iphone, but this feature is not yet available in the carplay version. gemini has added an “ask maps” function to google maps, capable of answering complex real-world questions about locations and destinations.
on the iphone, users can navigate to a certain location, then say “hey google” or tap the gemini icon to engage in conversation with gemini within google maps. apple began allowing third-party voice‑assistant apps to interact with carplay in ios 26.4, which may be why google is able to integrate gemini into the carplay version of google maps.
at present, the gemini integration has not yet been officially launched in the carplay version of google maps, but since the relevant framework has already been embedded in the app, this feature could roll out soon. apps such as chatgpt, grok, and perplexity are already available on carplay.
